B.Traven, Das Totenschiff, 1983, p. 180 f. (chapt. 30): please, see the original text on the German language site. A free translation is provided as follows: ... The imitative instinct of the human race makes heroes and slaves ... Men undoubtedly prefers beaten tracks. These allow men to feel certain and comfortable. The imitative instinct is to blame for the fact that manhood has not found to true progress within the recent sixthousand years, but lives as in the beginning of the European period - in spite of radio and aviation. .... even constitutions that ones nourished themselves from young and firy blood, suffer from calcification after some time. ... Only that, what is done different to the way it has been done in the old days, only that, what is thought in a new way - under the protest of fathers, popes, holy men and those responsible - has provided mankind with new outlooks and the confidence that progression may be observed one day. This day will be in sight, once man will no further rely on institutions and authorities ....
